Let’s discuss Cat Carriers

As a cattery we are presented with many different styles and sizes of cat carriers.. so which one is best?

It is a hard question to answer, would you choose a plastic hard case? A wicker basket? Or a fabric carrier? Or maybe you’re thinking about the carry bag?? it all depends on your furry feline friend. Whilst some cat prefer to see where they’re going, many others like to hide.

A plastic carrier is available in many different sizes, the top can be detached from the bottom and the door is a metal grid, some have a metal grid on the top for lifting in and out instead of trying to get your furry friend to go through a door at one end, these are easy to clean and reasonably secure unless it is a cheap plastic that is a little flimsy in which case we have seen cats break free!

The traditional wicker baskets, generally have a metal grid for a door which is either secured with belt buckle type straps or some we’ve seen just have a piece of toed ribbon! The wicker example isn’t very easy to clean, and it makes creaking noises when lifting or placing down.

The soft carrier is a total different game! In our personal experience we have seen cats open the zips, the carrier collapses when your at the crucial moment of putting your furry friend in and they are not too bad for washing but then you have to wait for them to dry.

Personally we like the all wire, top loading baskets, they have a rod to secure - the top and nothing is getting out, if your cat likes to hide - simply place a towel of the top,

Any carrier you choose should be easy to clean - especially if your furry friend has travel sickness, a little note from us - please do not worry if your furry friend has had an accident in the carrier - we will sort it all out when you arrive, and your furry friend is safely in their chalet.

As a general rule, you should have a carrier for each furry friend, travelling together is not always good and can cause unnecessary stress, things to consider are the size of your cat and if a kitten - how big will he/she be as an adult, a carrier should be one and a half times the size of the cat, allowing enough room to stand up comfortably and turn around, how easy to clean the carrier and how safe is the carrier - can my furry friend open the doors? Push through the doors or unzip the zipper?

Always remember once your furry friend is safely in the carrier keep the carrier closed until you reach your destination.
