Since the 1st of May we decided to add in our Terms and Conditions that all cats must have a Veterinary Prescribed flea and worm treatment before they board at Kitty Comforts.
For most, this has been understood and accepted and we have had no problems, however, some customers understandably do not understand why we ask for this, so hopefully this will answer some of your questions…
Fleas and worms can be a common problem in a boarding cattery, a boarding cattery is classed as a high risk area for an infestation and can be quite challenging to get the problem under control.
Why do I have to have a Veterinary Flea and Worm treatment?
We ask for all our customers to purchase a Veterinary Prescribed flea and worm treatment prior to boarding to give their furry felines the best possible protection against fleas and worms whilst boarding.
Why can’t I use a shop bought flea and worm treatment ?
A shop bought flea and worm treatment does not need a license to be sold, a Veterinary Prescribed treatment is under a license - meaning it is stronger and more effective against fleas and worms.
Does my cat have to be treated all the time with a Veterinary Prescribed flea and worm treatment?
This is totally your choice, (obviously vets recommend it) but in order to stay at Kitty Comforts they must have a Veterinary Prescribed treatment. The rest of the time you can use a shop bought treatment if needed but that is your choice.
How do I know if the medication I use is a prescription or an over the counter product?
The easiest way is to ask your vet, basically if you can go in to a pet shop or online and pick up a treatment and pay for it without the cat being seen or them asking for a copy of a Veterinary Prescription - it is not suitable for boarding.
My cat has an over the counter product - why won’t you let him/her board?
All cats boarding at Kitty Comforts have had a Veterinary Prescribed treatments before coming in, some cats only have a Veterinary Prescribed treatment when they board at the cattery, the rest of the time they have an over the counter treatment, if the cat did have fleas when coming in to the cattery then the fleas would be abandoning ship! They are then looking for their next host - most likely your cat - especially if he/she has not had the Veterinary Prescribed treatment.
How can I prove I have a Veterinary Prescribed flea/worm treatment?
When you purchase a Veterinary Prescribed flea and worm treatment you will be given the medication in a box which will have a sticker on which tells us the vets details, owners details, pets name and name of medication and dosage - you just need to bring the packaging along with you,
What if I don’t have the packaging for the Veterinary Prescribed treatment?
Simply call the vets where you purchased the medication and ask for a copy of the pets history or receipt for the last Prescribed flea and worm treatment, this will give us the name of medication and the date along with the Veterinary details.
What if I arrive at the cattery and my cat hasn’t had a Prescription medication?
Your cat will need a Veterinary Prescribed flea and worm treatment in order to board. If you arrive without the correct medication given then you would be offered 2 options
You will need to leave the cattery to purchase a treatment, treat the cat and then you can return to the cattery.
You could call the veterinary practice and ask them to leave some medication out for us to collect (this option would be chargeable to the customer for medication and our travel time & dependant on our time and staffing)
If either of these options are not suitable then unfortunately you will be refused boarding and asked to leave.
Will I get a refund of my fees if I haven’t treated my cat with a Veterinary Prescribed treatment and i’m unable to get a treatment?
When making a booking all customers are sent a confirmation email, the email also has attachments (invoice, Terms and Conditions, Veterinary Authorisation and Covid), from receiving the email customers have 24 hours to read the attachments and pay a booking fee. If a customer has any questions then these need to be asked prior to paying the booking fee. Once this booking fee is received/paid it is on the understanding that the Terms and Conditions are agreed and will be followed. Therefore if the customer arrives at the cattery without the Veterinary Prescribed Flea / Worm treatment and is unwilling to purchase the correct treatment
and is then refused boarding a refund/ transfer of money will not be offered or given.
Can I have example of what you accept and unaccept as treatments?
Accepted. Unaccepted
Nexguard Frontline
Broadline Bob Martin
Advocate. Johnson’s 4 Fleas
Prinovox. Beaphar
Prinocate. Flea collars
Stronghold
Felpreva
Please note Advantage is sometimes prescribed by vets, although you can buy it online without a prescription, if you use this medication you will need a confirmation that this is what your vet prescribes - packaging with the vets details and pets name on the label (if bought from the vets) or a letter/email from the Veterinary surgery stating Advantage is prescribed for (name of cat along with owners name and a date).
All the accepted examples will need to be purchased from your Veterinary Surgery, or you can ask them to write you a prescription and then you can purchase them online, (sometimes cheaper online)
